Friends of Don Bosco (Malta) organised a unique training course called Out of the Blue from 1-7 September 2024, funded by the Erasmus+ programme, which trained youth workers and educators with the knowledge and skills to deal with stress, depression and anxiety in young people. The course harnesses the therapeutic benefits of blue spaces, such as coastal areas, to promote mental wellbeing. Using non-formal, experiential and practical learning methods, participants explored the links between water, youth work and mental health. The programme included a range of activities including stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), music and rhythm workshops and free diving. By immersing participants in nature, the course focused on a deeper understanding of the issues and encouraged the development of inclusive strategies to support young people with fewer opportunities. Participants left with practical tools and inspiration to use in their daily lives and youth work, promoting a positive impact on the mental health of the young people they support.
