Friends of Don Bosco Malta is delighted to share the ongoing restoration of Il-Luċi, a historic searchlight battery from the British period, beautifully set near the “Top of the World” area in Għargħur.

Through this project we aim to give new life to this remarkable site, preserving its history while transforming it into a green and safe space for the community. Il-Luċi will soon become a place where people can connect with nature, discover the island’s heritage, and enjoy moments of peace.

The site was entrusted to the organisation by the Għargħur Local Council, with the aim of restoring and caring for the area’s natural environment. The goal is to turn Il-Luċi into a safe and welcoming green space that can be used by the community for educational and community activities.

The works carried out at il-Luci were supported by the GAL Majjistral Foundation through funding from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) under the Rural Development Programme (Measure 4.4) and also received assistance from the NGO Co-Financing Fund 2025, which covered part of the organisation’s costs for the restoration and environmental works.

Through this investment, Friends of Don Bosco Malta has:

  • Restored the area around Il-Luċi, creating a cleaner and greener environment.
  • Installed a new irrigation system to keep the plants and trees healthy.
  • Repaired a 90,000-litre water reservoir to support local biodiversity.
  • Planted twelve indigenous and fruit trees, pruned existing trees, and cleared debris.
  • Replaced and secured the main door and windows with strong metal bars for safety and protection.

This marks one of the first major investments in Il-Luċi, and it is just the beginning. The area will continue to develop as a managed green and educational space, open to young people and the wider community.
