Last Saturday, as part of European Youth Week, the initiative “Step Beyond” was successfully implemented as a one-day interactive event bringing together different generations of people from Malta and Gozo. The activity was designed to encourage reflection, dialogue, and personal development through meaningful exchange between generations.

The event focused on creating a space where participants could engage in intergenerational discussions, share personal life experiences, and explore the impact of key decisions and opportunities throughout their lives. Older adults contributed valuable insights from their lived experiences, while young participants actively reflected on their own perspectives, aspirations, and challenges. This reciprocal exchange helped foster mutual understanding, respect, and solidarity across age groups.
A key component of the programme was peer and volunteer storytelling. Young people who had previously participated in volunteering activities, international exchanges, or personal development projects shared their experiences and the ways in which these opportunities influenced their growth. These stories highlighted the importance of equal access to opportunities and encouraged participants to consider different pathways for their own development.

The event also included a structured coaching and goal-setting session. Participants were guided through exercises aimed at identifying personal aspirations and translating them into practical, achievable steps. Each participant developed a basic action plan to support their next stages in life, whether related to education, volunteering, mobility programmes such as Erasmus+, or other personal goals.
In addition to the formal sessions, participants shared a communal lunch and had time dedicated to informal networking. This created further opportunities for connection, dialogue, and the strengthening of relationships among participants from different backgrounds and age groups.

Overall, “Step Beyond” successfully created an inclusive environment that encouraged reflection, collaboration, and personal empowerment. The activity reinforced the importance of solidarity, fairness, and active engagement, while motivating young people to step beyond their comfort zones and take ownership of their future pathways.
We would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported, contributed to, and took part in this project.
