Mentors

Job Description: Mentors

Organization: Friends of Don Bosco

Sector: Youth Support and Community Services

Friends of Don Bosco is seeking caring and committed Mentors to offer accompaniment, guidance, and support to young people who may lack consistent family support. Through regular one-to-one mentoring, mentors provide a stable adult presence, helping young people grow in confidence, resilience, and independence.

While this is a paid role, it is rooted in a voluntary, relationship-focused approach, centred on commitment, trust, and genuine human connection.

Role Overview

The Mentor accompanies a young person on their journey by offering listening, guidance, and consistent support. The role is not about solving problems, but about being present, encouraging reflection, and walking alongside young people as they navigate everyday challenges and decisions.

Mentors are supported through training and regular supervision, ensuring they feel confident, prepared, and accompanied in their role.

This role is flexible and designed to fit around other commitments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing accompaniment, guidance, and support to a young person.
  • Build a trusting and respectful mentoring relationship based on consistency and care.
  • Meet regularly with the young person (approximately 8 hours per month, arranged flexibly).
  • Offer encouragement, positive role modelling, and support towards personal goals and independence.
  • Participate in training and supervision sessions provided by Friends of Don Bosco.
  • Work in collaboration with the project manager and follow agreed mentoring guidelines.
  • Respect confidentiality, safeguarding, and organisational policies at all times.

What We’re Looking For

  • A genuine desire to accompany and support young people in a meaningful way
  • A caring, reliable, and respectful approach
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Ability to commit time consistently, even if limited
  • Openness to learning and reflective practice
  • Alignment with the values and mission of Friends of Don Bosco

What We Offer

  • Initial and ongoing training to support mentors in their role
  • Regular supervision and support, ensuring mentors are never alone in their work
  • A flexible commitment that can fit around other responsibilities
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting difference in a young person’s life

Time Commitment

This role involves an average commitment of around 8 hours per month, arranged flexibly in agreement with the young person and programme staff.
